Upcoming Meeting:

December 18-19 (Mon-Tues), 2006. - CalEON Meeting - UC Berkeley

There will be an important two-day CalEON planning/writing meeting at the UC Berkeley, December 18-19 (Mon-Tues), 2006.

The primary goal is a working meeting for discussing the scientific and logistic issues and for writing. The task in front of us right now is to respond to three RFIs:

  • Research Design - Observational
  • Research Design - Experimental
  • Core Wildland Sites

In addition, we plan to tour the planned CalEON core wildland site at the Blue Oak Ranch, the new UC Natural Reserve being formulated in the mountains east of San Jose.

The current plan:

Monday December 18 we'll start mid-morning with a field trip to Blue Oak Ranch. We will spend several hours there, including lunch (which we'll arrange), then we'll come back to Berkeley for dinner and an initial meeting in the evening. Out-of-towners will need to arrange lodging for that night, since we'll start first thing in the morning

Tuesday December 19 we'll meet on the Berkeley campus, until about 5:00pm (so people will be able to take an evening flight out).

People who are flying in should try to arrive by 9:00 in the morning on December 18th, at San Jose Airport since it is very close to Blue Oak Ranch. We will arrange a pick-up there, in time to rendezvous at 10:00 with folks who are driving in (we'll meet at the gateway to Blue Oak Ranch, up Mt. Hamilton Road, State Hwy 130, just north of Joseph D. Grant County Park). Detailed driving directions will be sent later.

People who are flying would be better off departing on December 19th, after 7:00 pm, from Oakland Airport since it is easily accessible from Berkeley campus by BART (it will be much harder to get to San Jose from Berkeley). If you fly Southwest there won't be any penalty for flying in one airport and out the other.

Thanks to the Vice Provost for Research at UCOP, funds will be available to support travel. So that we can plan space-wise, please reply as soon as you can.

Past Meetings:

August 26-27, 2005 - CalEON Meeting - U.C. Riverside

The purpose of the 4th CalEON meeting on August 26 &27, 2005 was to evaluate the powerpoint presentations from the ESA and focus our efforts at identifying potential sites and resources for a CalEON node.

Agenda and meeting minutes

CalEON comments sent to NEON, Inc. following August meeting

April 22, 2005 - CalEON Planning Meeting - U.C. Davis

The third and final planning meeting for CalEON, the California region of the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) being developed at the National Science Foundation, took place on April 22, 2005 on the University of California, Davis campus. NEON has currently defined 19 national regions that will eventually be part of this network and we hope California's existing strong directions, facilities, and scientists will make CalEON one of the first to be implemented.

If you have questions about the focus of the April '05 meeting, CalEON, AIBS or NEON, you may contact Mike Allen (mallen@ucr.edu), Brent Mishler (mishler@calmail.berkeley.edu), Susan Ustin (slustin@ucdavis.edu), or Jim Richards (jhrichards@ucdavis.edu).
